MAPRISE today runs on one founder plus AI development support. Why we started small, what we believe, and when we'll bring in teammates. A direct note to anyone reading this around our company formation (planned October 2026).
MAPRISE is a GIS SaaS for the real estate, finance, and homebuilder industries across the seven prefectures of Kyushu, started in 2025. As of May 2026, it's developed by one founder (Kinoko) plus AI development support.
This post is a direct answer to three questions: "Why solo?", "When will you bring in teammates?", and "Who do you want to build with?" It's especially aimed at people who found MAPRISE around our company formation (planned for October 2026) and might want to join.
Why solo
Three reasons.
1. Product-market fit can't be bought with headcount
The first thing a startup has to prove is that there are people willing to pay for the service. No amount of capital or headcount produces that answer — only conversations with the market and rapid hypothesis iteration do.
For an industry-specialized SaaS like MAPRISE, it's essential that the founder personally understands the operational workflows of Kyushu real estate / finance / homebuilders deeply. Iterating fast as one person to lock in PMF first, then hiring, is usually faster than having five people grind for a year.
2. AI became a real "co-developer"
Since late 2024, AI development support reached a level where it functions as a real "co-developer" for an early-stage startup — supporting day-to-day decisions on both design and implementation.
Internally we run a continuous practice of accumulating knowledge so we "don't repeat the same mistake twice," letting even a small operation ship production-quality product continuously.
3. Run lean through the funding winter
Since 2023, Japan's startup funding environment has clearly cooled. Better to secure 6-12 months of runway with one founder × low fixed costs × AI development support, then raise on the back of demonstrable PMF — rather than dilute early at lower valuations.
As a solo operation, even after rent and living costs, the savings from my pre-departure salaried period plus retirement payout cover 1-2 years of runway.
What I believe right now (4 points)
A. "Kyushu" is a major opportunity
Tokyo SaaS is saturated; Kansai is crowded. Kyushu, on the other hand, is an economy of roughly 12.5 million people and about 50 trillion JPY in gross regional product (approximate figures based on Japan's national census and Cabinet Office prefectural accounts) with essentially no regional-specialized GIS SaaS player. Public reference services are thin and nationwide; high-end GIS products cost tens of thousands per month, putting them out of reach for SMBs.
"Kyushu-specialized, free to start, from 7,800 JPY/month for serious use" wins on both market size and price band.
B. AI-driven SaaS changes UX through "one-stop DD"
Before the generative AI era, real estate DD assumed "tour five sites and transcribe into Excel." Now "click a location → ask the AI → get a PDF" is a realistic UX.
MAPRISE chains natural-language query → structured retrieval → formatted results → graphs → PDF in an integrated flow. That's an integrated experience that point tools strung together can't reach.
C. Doc-driven operations is investment in "future me + future engineers"
All MAPRISE knowledge is accumulated systematically in internal documentation. The point is to build a foundation where "future joining engineer + future me + contractor" can participate just by reading.
D. "Business continuity" and "code maintainability" are the same problem
Even as a solo operation, I'm responsible for ensuring "if I fall ill / have an accident / lose motivation, the service doesn't stop, the handoff is possible, and investors' equity is protected."
MAPRISE is in mid-migration from the current architecture to a more maintainable next-generation structure. The whole point is "no matter when someone joins, they can ship a PR within a month."
When teammates come in
Clear milestones.
| Phase | Approximate time | Hiring |
|---|---|---|
| Phase 1: Founder + AI development | 2025 - 2026 Q3 | No hiring, PMF validation period |
| Phase 2: LLC formation + contractors (accounting / design) | Planned October 2026 | Part-time contractors (10-20 h/month) |
| Phase 3: Convert to Kabushiki-Kaisha + seed round + 1-2 full-time | Planned Q1 2027 | Full-stack engineer / sales |
| Phase 4: Post-Series A expansion | Q4 2027+ | Team of 5-10, PM / sales / customer success |
What I can say now (2026 Q2):
- Contractor work (accounting / legal review / marketing) will begin formal contracts after the October 2026 LLC formation
- Full-time hiring starts early 2027 after the seed round
- Side-project / pro bono participation (~5h/week) can be discussed anytime (info@maprise.jp)
The 5 types I want to build with
| Type | Expected role |
|---|---|
| Industry veteran (5+ years in Kyushu real estate, Kyushu residence preferred) | Product improvement domain advice, intro to early customers, industry oversight |
| Full-stack engineer (modern web stack + 3+ years SaaS) | Architecture migration lead, map core / AI chat / report features |
| Data engineer (spatial DB + ETL + Python, GIS experience welcome) | Expand the data catalog, maintain automated ETL pipelines |
| Business development / sales (B2B SaaS, relationships with regional banks / shinkin / major real estate) | Sales into Kyushu's 7 prefectures, Pro / Business plan expansion |
| Designer (UI/UX, B2B SaaS, map + dashboard experience) | Landing + app UI improvements, post-migration component design |
Probably not a fit right now (to be honest):
- "Tokyo-based, build a nationwide SaaS": MAPRISE roots deep in Kyushu
- "Fully remote, fully independent": Expect to attend monthly in-person meetings in central Fukuoka City
- "Need stock options soon": Full-time hiring (Phase 3) is still ahead
Founder background
Kinoko:
- Based in Fukuoka Prefecture
- 20 years at a major electronics manufacturer (10 years as a software engineer, 10 years in product planning / overseas marketing) → 3 years at a company based in Fukuoka Prefecture (current role)
- 2019: Awarded Excellence Prize in the Healthcare category at a Kansai regional bank's business plan contest
- Holds 20+ certifications in AWS / AI-related fields
- Started the MAPRISE prototype in 2024
- Planned departure October 2026, full-time on MAPRISE through the new LLC
Engineering plus product-planning / marketing experience, layered with the industry understanding gained from my current role, motivates me to bridge "what the industry on the ground actually wants" with "what's technically possible."
