In the middle of the second-round document screening for the Fukuoka Yokatoko Business Plan Contest, I received a call from the Fukuoka Prefecture SME Support Office, asking me to present MAPRISE's business plan at a training session for people who support new businesses across the region. Here's how the day went, and what I took away from it.
An unexpected call
After applying to the Fukuoka Yokatoko Business Plan Contest and submitting my documents for the second-round screening, I received a call from the Fukuoka Prefecture SME Support Office. "We'd like you to present your business plan at a training session for people who support new businesses," they said.
The results weren't in yet, and I hadn't even reached the pitch stage, so the invitation genuinely surprised me — in a good way. It gave me a reason to feel, once again, that I want to keep working to spread the word about this business and get it into the hands of more people.
A room full of people who support new businesses
The session ran on Monday, June 29, 2026, from 9:30 to 12:00, at the Fukuoka Prefecture SME Promotion Center in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City. Around 20 people were in the room: staff from municipal commerce and industry departments, entrepreneurship-support officers at local Chambers of Commerce and Industry, representatives from regional financial institutions, licensed professionals such as CPAs, lawyers, and tax accountants, and people from consulting firms — everyone whose job it is to support new businesses taking root locally. Every year, the office invites one contest applicant to present a business plan as the basis for a discussion among these supporters about what kind of assistance is possible. In my day-to-day, I mostly interact with service users and business partners, so I rarely get the chance to sit down with this many people working on the front lines of local entrepreneurship support all at once. Being welcomed into a room built specifically for "supporting the supporters," as the presenter, was something I genuinely appreciated.
Re-learning how to think about a new business
I took a half-day off work that morning to attend. The session opened with a lecture on the fundamentals of business planning from the instructor leading the day: how to structure a business plan, how to think about markets and customers, and what supporters actually look for when assessing a plan. The lecture also touched on common pitfalls founders fall into and the points worth keeping in mind when explaining a plan to a third party. One point in particular stuck with me — the explanation of how many gaps exist between a still-raw idea and a business plan mature enough to actually be supported, in terms of things like market-size evidence and revenue projections. As someone who hasn't yet formally started a company, it gave me material to look back at my own plan with fresh eyes. Even when you feel like you're already moving forward, opportunities to step back and review things this systematically are rare, and it helped surface assumptions that are easy to miss in the day-to-day work.
Presenting MAPRISE's business plan
After the lecture, I had up to 30 minutes, including Q&A, to present MAPRISE's business plan: what problem we're trying to solve as a GIS SaaS built specifically for real estate, finance, and development work in Kyushu, and why now is the moment for it. Afterward, the instructor added some supplementary commentary, pointing out perspectives I hadn't considered myself — a real learning experience. Explaining a business plan in front of an audience and fielding questions on the spot isn't something that comes up often in day-to-day work, and it gave me a fresh appreciation for how hard, and how interesting, it is to put your own thinking into words.
What the group work surfaced
After my presentation came group work and a full-group discussion. The comments and survey responses from these support professionals contained a good number of insights relevant to moving the business forward. Some appreciated how we separate our B2B and B2C rollout; others said answering questions on the spot during Q&A made things easier to follow. One comment that stood out: local Chambers of Commerce are stepping up visits to member businesses, and newly built structures often aren't reflected yet in existing map services — someone suggested we also consider proposing MAPRISE to Chambers of Commerce and Industry. Another suggested that partnering with local efforts addressing vacant-home issues could produce new success stories. Both points came from people who work with local businesses every day, and they were concrete, ground-level observations. Where I had mostly been picturing real estate and financial institutions as our customers, I was shown a breadth I hadn't fully considered — Chambers of Commerce and Industry, and various local organizations. I also received words of encouragement about the drive to take an idea from zero and keep pushing it forward. Altogether, it was a valuable chance to learn what these supporters actually pay attention to when they look at a new business.
In closing
I'm grateful for having been given an opportunity like this. I'm still just an individual who hasn't yet formally started a company, but I want to take this experience and keep working to get MAPRISE into the hands of more businesses across Kyushu. My sincere thanks to everyone who made this opportunity possible.
